Layout and design for Thuis, an artist's book by Roos Tulen collecting the work of one hundred artists responding to a single question during the 2020 lockdown: what means home to you?
During the first lockdown, artist Roos Tulen asked one hundred artists to capture their idea of “home” in a single A5 work. The responses became an exhibition at Museum De Lakenhal, and then this book — a 542-page object that is as much artwork as publication.
I handled the layout and worked on the design: giving structure to a hundred wildly different contributions, the accompanying texts and Tulen’s analysis, while holding on to the quiet, white-heavy space the work needed to breathe. The book uses Japanese binding — pages bound closed, so the reader has to cut them open, with a beautiful designed brass opener, before the book reveals itself, echoing the experience Tulen had opening each envelope of work for the first time.
A book that only becomes an ordinary book once you’ve opened it.
